Madagascar holds 'silent walk' against reckless drivers

Madagascar recently held a silent walk in Antananarivo against irresponsible behavior of some drivers in the country. Commercial drivers in the country are mostly accused of not obeying traffic rules.

The event was organized in memory of the children who died in a road accident last week.

Two accidents occured last Friday in the capital, Antananarivo, involving a local taxis, and killed 10 people, including 6 primary school children.

Commercial drivers have been accused of excessive speeding and overloading of passengers.

However, the drivers have also tried to justify their behaviors stating that they have to meet daily financial targets of their vehicles.

The Madagascar authorities had announced a measure to strengthen the transportation sector.They had requested that all drivers get biometric licenses, not later than next June.

According to the authorities in the country, offenders would be penalized.

In 2014, the authorities decided to suspend the operating licenses of cars for public transport, mostly responsible for road accident.

The country’s Department of Transport had urged the co-operatives of transport to educate their members on the conduct and maintenance of their vehicles.

According to a WHO data published in May 2014, Road Traffic Accidents Deaths in the country reached 4,210 or 2.9 percent of total deaths.
